“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Those are words by Albert Einstein. But how this can be related to your life? Let’s check it out.
In what ways do you “see things”?
What Einstein has in mind when he said these words? Well, unfortunately, we can now just try to guess. Unless someone from you has the time machine so we can go back and ask him for the explanation. There are many speculations and interpretations of this sentence. The one I do like is that, from our way of seeing the world around us, depends on how we are feeling.
I am sure you have heard about the half full-empty glass example. It is revealing if you are an optimist or pessimist, depending on your description of this image. I will not explain that in detail as, this example, is used to such an extent that it makes me yawn, every time someone is explaining this again. The point from this example is, that we do perceive things in general in two ways. The thing is either negative or positive. Well, some might say that there is also a neutral state. True. But we want to focus today only on the two “extremes”. As you can not be all the time neutral. If you think differently, good luck with that. Believe me or not, it takes a lot of hassle to maintain neutrality.
Why is “seeing things” important?
But, why actually bother with that? Why do you need or want to care about “the glass being half empty or full”? About the way, you see the world. What you can gain from knowing this thing? Those are very good questions I must admit. I was wondering about them as well. Every time I have heard someone mentioning this glass example. And believe me, this example, is great, but also a bit overused. Though it clearly and easily shows what kind of mindset you have. And what comes next, how you perceive things, events, people.
Why this might be important? Well, take this kind of situation for example. You are meeting your friend who looks upset. You try to talk with your friend, find out what’s wrong. What had happened. Though, this friend of yours, is so deep in “his world” that it does not answer. Or it does just like by saying that’s all good. Where you clearly see it is not. That something troubles your friend, a lot.
Now, being in that kind of situation can make you feel sad as well. Moreover, you might consider, that it is you, who makes your friend feel this way. You start to worry yourself, feel guilty, maybe even shameful. Or you might get angry at your friend, that it does not want to talk to you and share this problem it struggles with, so you could maybe offer help. Either way, in both situations you would feel negative emotions.
You see where this goes, right? What if, you just accept the fact, that your friend struggle with something. And you are innocent, not responsible for your friend feelings. Of course, you would love to help. You would love to take this burden off your’s friend shoulders. Though, you can not, but this is no reason to take it on you, to join into the negative club.
How can you brighten your vision?
So now, how can you perceive things the way that will be positive? How can you change the way you look at things, to experience things to change? Well, it will not be easy. It is a very hard and difficult task. Only a few can achieve it. Just messing with you. Yes, the whole thing will require some effort. But it is well worth it.
So, first of all. Whatever you are seeing now. Whatever is the situation you find yourself in. Stop yourself from jumping to a conclusion, that this is something unfortunate. Look at it with knowing that this, no matter how difficult might look, is just temporary and that it hides a great treasure inside. As it is said, when the universe wants to give you something, it wraps it into trouble. The biggest trouble is, the more valuable treasure is in it.
Secondly, ask yourself, a few questions. What I will gain if I will just sit and whine about my bad situation? Is this kind of seeing this thing makes me feel any better? Is it help me to tackle the trouble? To find a solution? What is the issue? Is there anything I can do about it? Is there anyone that can help me with this? Where I can look for some help?
Lastly, look at the whole situation with hope and firm confidence, that it is just a temporary thing and you will benefit from it a lot. For once you will become wiser, stronger and more resilient. Moreover, you will learn some new truths about yourself. You will gain some skills, that might not be obvious straight away, though very helpful at a later point in your life.
