When, last time did you check your beliefs? What are beliefs and what impact do they have on your life? Why is important to check your beliefs? Can you replace undesired beliefs? Answers to these questions you can learn from the material to follow.
What are beliefs?
I am sure you heard this term many times. It is getting more and more popular, recently. Did you ever give a thought to what actually are beliefs? And where do they come from? How would you describe belief? Please, share your thoughts. Your definition for that expression. I am really curious about your idea for this term. Who knows, you might teach me something new. Thou, back to the topic…
There is no person on this planet that would be free of them. We all believe in something. Even if someone will claim differently. Always, there is something that this person will believe. Sometimes this beliving happens on the unconscious level. Like, trying to get rich, and at the same time, doing, unconsciously, everything to destroy all these efforts, because of believing that being rich is evil. But where do all of those beliefs of yours come from? I talk about that a few times already. You might hear or read some materials about that as well in other places. As I said, it is a pretty popular subject now.
The simplest and, in my opinion, the best explanation is, that these are your fundaments and triggers, for your actions, thoughts and emotions. Most of them you develop during your first years of life, by observing your surrounding. Your parents and relatives. Your neighbours and other people you’ve met. Even by watching TV and reading books. You make your conclusions. And if this situation repeats many times, you just get proof, confirmation, that this is how it must be. This conclusion then sinks into your subconscious and form a belief, that you are using since now. Because of that, the question arises…
Why is so important to check your beliefs list?
Partially we answer that already. The clue is hidden in the statement, that most of these beliefs, were created during your first years of life. So, some time ago. Maybe ten, maybe twenty years back, or even more. So now, consider this example. If you have a car, would you not check it from time to time? Just to assure that everything works fine. If necessary, fixing or replacing parts that wear off and make driving dangerous? Or you would just drive it until it will fall apart?
No matter what you do in your life. If you are a gamer, gardener, painter, actor, or whoever else. You name it. This kind of checkup, of equipment, skills and knowledge, is necessary. Usually, it is done regularly, so you will keep yourself up to date and your resources in good shape. To be able to do your job properly and efficiently. To remove all outdated, broken, unsuitable things that might harm you, your career or someone else. This is a normal part of everyone’s life. Things wear off, new discoveries are made, new skills are required. But how does all this connects to beliefs? You already know, right?
Beliefs also can get outdated and instead of serving you in life, helping you to get to the place you would like to be. To achieve your goal. The old beliefs might get in your way. Taking again the getting rich example, you want to have more money. Just so you could be relaxed, that if you need it, for any reason, you have them. However, at the same time, you hold a belief, that those who have the money, either cheat, trick or steal them from other people. But you are an honest person. Do you see where this is going? You can not have money, be wealthy, as in your head these kinds of people are evil. So, does this belief support you?
How can you change unwanted beliefs?
If you found yourself possessing a belief, that is no longer relevant. One, that is not serving you anymore. Even worst, one that deals you harm. Destroy your dreams and plans. What would you do? Would you like to still keep it? Or, rather, as was previously mentioned, you would like to remove it? That’s what I thought. No one likes to have anything that makes him or her suffer. Unfortunately, you can not simply remove beliefs. I know, I’ve said that it is possible. Yet, again it is not possible to just remove your old, unwanted beliefs.
What you can do, however, is to replace them with new beliefs. The beliefs that you want to own. One that will serve you and help you in achieving your goals. But how can it be done? As with everything that is precious, it will require you to do some work. First, you will need to observe your emotions and reactions. Then whenever you will notice some emotions, you do not like, raising in you, pause yourself and look at this emotion. Search deep, where it comes from. Why does it arise? What triggers it? This way you will find the belief that initiates it.
At this point, you might want to ask yourself. Is this belief still valid? Is it assisting me well? If not, what kind of belief I would like to have in this place? Asking yourself those questions will help you realise, what kind of beliefs you desire. It will make you more conscious about yourself and your choices. It will make you more aware of why do you react a particular way to some circumstances. Most importantly, it will allow you to choose a belief that will serve you. I will not lie to you, that this will be easy. Thou, there is a saying by Harv Eker, which goes like that – “If you are willing to do only what’s easy, life will be hard. But if you are willing to do what’s hard, life will be easy”.
Summarising. We talk about what are beliefs and where they come from. You know why it is important to do regular checkups of your beliefs. Lastly, you know how you can replace them. The question to ask yourself is, are you ready to do some work to have a better and easier life?
